Well, Here's a story for you all. ^^ It's just chapter one. I'll post the other chapters below. Feel free to give your opinions!
Arianna sat up from her bed, and gave a typical yawn and stretch. Today was a Saturday, a perfect day to just relax and let the day just run by without much thinking or action. Arianna loved Saturday for that very reason, but little did fifteen year-old Arianna know, that the Saturday she so much enjoyed would change her life forever. Before that life-changing event happens, however, let us take a look at Arianna’s un-changed life.
Arianna has the usual teenager appearance; tall and skinny. Her hair drapes past her shoulders in a straight fashion, a natural chestnut colour with streaks of light blonde. Her skin is light for the lack of sun it receives, and her eyes match the lightness of her skin by being a light baby blue. As a teenager, Arianna doesn’t find interest in many teenager things, like piercings, make-up or miniphones (a type of miniature cell phone; about the size of a thumb). Instead Arianna enjoys television, video games and her much loved hover-board.
As some of the new names suggest, the year in which Arianna was born was 2195. The exact year in which Arianna’s life changed, the year now, was 2210. In these years, much has been accomplished that people two centuries earlier thought would be. Hover cars were created, making problems with pollution eliminated. Artificial intelligence has been applied to some robots, although the IQ of these “AR-Bots” is about the same as a possum. Television and gaming nearly jumps out of the screen without the blue and red 3D glasses. However, the one thing that has been much awaited for and not yet invented is the time machine. Yes, the car or box that’ll take someone to the past or future at will, anytime, anyplace. Some scientists even devoted their lives to creating the time machine, in which Arianna’s parents exactly did. And that is the main thing that will change the girl’s life forever.
After her yawn and stretch, Arianna lay back down in her bed and gave a content sigh. In her mind, that day was going to be great – just relaxing, chilling, and sleeping. It was her schedule, after the long five days of tiring school. Arianna wasn’t much of an “A” student, but she remembered her five page report on the Titanic, in which she got a much appreciated A+. Other than that, school was not a favoured thing of Arianna’s. However, the day was a Saturday, so no school.
As Arianna lay in her bed, content, a sudden bang sounded from the basement, where Arianna’s parents, Jiglon and Sarah, often preformed experiments for their time machine, which actually remained in a lab a block away. Arianna scrunched her brow and flipped the covers over so she could sleepily crawl out and go check on her parents. She was used to explosions from the basement, but this one sounded extra-big.
Arianna’s father was wearing a welding mask for a reason Arianna didn’t know, and her mother sat at a desk mixing viscous liquids. Arianna slipped on some safety glasses – a requirement in the basement – and went over to them, asking what the noise was.
It was Jiglon, the father that replied, “Oh, just some experiments, dear.”He began to weld two pieces of metal together, and Arianna then understood why he wore a welding mask.
“Oh, Jiggy,” Exclaimed Sarah, Arianna’s mother, “I have it! This mixture creates the perfect solution to balance the chronojuice.” Then Sarah acknowledged her daughter. “Hello, sweetie. I and your father are working on the machine.”
Arianna nodded, already knowing that. She was interested in what her mother had said about the chronojuice, for this could mean a triumph for the Wolfe family time machine. Chronojuice is a substance that really helps with the time traveling process, but it is also the cause for most time machine failures. It often reacts to other substances in the contraption, and like vinegar and baking soda, it foams and causes the machine to fail. There is a liquid, anti-chronojuice it’s called, which can cancel out the reaction of the chronojuice, but as a result only allows the person to travel back at the most ten seconds. That is the most any time machine could dish out, but if there is a new substance to still allow the chronojuice to work well and not let the reaction happen then success is suddenly very close.
Arianna came over to her mother and looked over her shoulder at the flask filled with the metallic liquid Arianna knew was chronojuice. The flask her mother had in her hand contained a different greenish substance that Arianna guessed was the stuff to balance the chronojuice. Its green-yellow colour almost reminded Arianna of vomit, along with the dark green swirls and bubbles, it sure looked like it.
“What will you call it?” Arianna asked her maternal parent.
“Wolfe-chronojuice.” Her mother replied without hesitation. “Hopefully, this will be used on time machines for centuries to come.”
Arianna smiled, and put her pale hand on her mother’s shoulder, which was covered by a lab coat. “Well, are you going to test it?” Arianna Wolfe asked.
“The Lab is closed today,” Arianna’s father replied for her mother, “maybe tomorrow we can.”
Sarah glared at her husband with her navy blue eyes. “Honey, you have keys, don’t you? This is a break through! We can’t wait until tomorrow to test the Wolfe-chronojuice out!”
Jiglon narrowed his eyes. “But no one else will be there. We need some helpers, y’know.” His face was hidden underneath the welding mask, but Arianna knew he was most likely frowning.
“Ari’s a helper, isn’t she?” Sarah retorted. “She can help out.” ‘Ari’ was Arianna’s nickname, and was actually what she was called most of the time.
Jiglon sighed. “So, you really want to try this new mixture on the machine? After a year’s work on that creation, you’re willing to jeopardize it all because you were too impatient to wait until we tested that on something else, something smaller?” Arianna heard him grind his teeth, waiting for his wife’s answer.
“I did test it, Jig. It works, it works really well. We could be successful with this!” She held up the flask, and the vomit liquid waved back and forth in the glass.
Jiglon flipped up his welding mask. “Alright, but if it ruins our machine, you build again all by yourself.” He snorted, and then walked over to the basement door. He took off his lab coat and hung it and the welding mask on a hook, and he began to mumble as he clomped up the stairs.
“He’s so stubborn.” Sarah sighed then looked at Arianna. “You’ll help us, won’t you, dear?”
Arianna simply nodded. She wouldn’t miss such event even if it meant losing a day of relaxation. The very thing her parents have devoted their life to is going to work – at least, Arianna hoped it would work.
The hover car zoomed to the skyscraper labeled “Wolfe Enterprises” in big red letters. Arianna had been to this building many times before, but for once she was excited to see it. So couldn’t wait to see the time machine work!
The car parked in a reserved parking slot, and Arianna unlocked the door and emerged from the transport vehicle. Wolfe Enterprises was quite a sight, for it reached far into the sky, and it almost seemed invisible because its walls were mainly windows. Wolfe Enterprises were mostly full of scientists interested into creating time-related inventions, but it was also open to scientists wanted to learn new things. Since it was a Saturday, not many workers would be there.
Jiglon walked up to the front door and fumbled through his pocket to find the keys. Arianna heard the tings of keys clacking together as Jiglon found the hoop and used the largest silver key to open the grand door. It swung open with no creaks and the family walked inside.
The main floor was more for visitors. It was like a time museum, but not of events in time, but time itself. There were pictures of un-successful time machines and even a sample of chronojuice. The three walked past the museum and took the elevator down, towards the huge laboratory in which the Wolfe family’s prided joy resided. Arianna gazed in awe as she saw the silver tube in the center of the room.
The Wolfe time machine looked like no other. It resembled a CT scan, but had a few extra components, such as the area where one inserts the chronojuice. Arianna hadn’t seen it so complete before. Basically, the machine was complete, except for the fact of the chronojuice. However, as Sarah had stated before, that problem could be solved.
Once they walked into the Lab, they were greeted by Arianna’s parents’ best worker, Mr. Grimm. The man was shorter than Jiglon, and looked like the definition of nerd. He had large glasses – which were actually safety glasses, since contact lenses completely replaced normal glasses – and had short brown hair, slicked in an odd style. Despite his geeky look, he had welcoming emerald eyes.
“Mr. Wolfe, how nice to see you,” He smiled, “I wasn’t expecting you.”
“Good morning to you too, Mr. Grimm,” Arianna’s father returned, “my wife has created a balancing solution to chronojuice. We’re here to test it out.”
Mr. Grimm’s dark eyebrows went up. “Really? Not like anti-chrono?” He gasped. ‘Chrono’ was a shorter way of saying chronojuice.
Sarah nodded and explained about the Wolfe-chrono, in which Arianna tuned out because she knew the story and was interested into the machine. It seemed someone sat on a platform, was strapped in, and then inserted into the tube. Also, a pin was put onto the traveler so the machine could bring the person back without going into the machine. It was quite a masterpiece.
“Ari,” came Sarah’s voice, “come with me, hun. We don’t want you to get hurt.” Arianna noticed her father was installing the chrono and Wolfe-chrono. Arianna stepped back with her mother towards a table where Mr. Grimm was already. After Jiglon was finished, he too went behind the table. Mr. Grimm flipped a switch and a clear force field materialized in front of them.
“So, little Ari, ready to see your parents’ work come alive?” Mr. Grimm said to Arianna.
“I’m fifteen, Mr. Grimm.” Arianna told her dad’s co-worker. “But yes, I’m ready.”
As Mr. Grimm pushed a button, Arianna felt a surge of excitement flow through her as the tube began to spin. Arianna had seen what happened to machines with chronojuice and anti-chrono: after twenty seconds, the machine would begin to spin wildly, and smoke would appear. Someone would have to shut off the machine before it would destroy itself. Arianna hoped that wouldn’t happen.
“Fifteen seconds running,” called Mr. Grimm over the roar of the machine as it churned over and over. Everyone crossed their fingers.
The machine made a small grinding noise, but nothing else. After fifty seconds, Mr. Grimm stopped it and everyone celebrated. The machine was working. Wolfe Enterprises had created the first successful time machine.
